Press Release

Back  by popular demand, the feature film Rx will be screened on Saturday, August 28, 7p.m. at the LEAD Center located at 75-170 Hualalai Road, E-100.  LEAD Center is the former Hualalai Theatre located in the Hualalai Office Center at the corner of Hualalai Rd. and Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona. Rx was written, directed, and filmed by 18-year-old Jesse Tunison of Volcano.  The project took two years of hard work by Jesse and the Kea`au Youth Business Center (KYBC) who produced the film.  Last spring, KYBC produced a CD called “Na Ano, Native Seeds, Volume I” which has been enthusiastically received by the Big Island community and beyond.  Featuring all original compositions by Big Island youth, the CD was mixed and mastered at KYBC’s own state-of-the-art sound recording studio located in the Kea`au Town Center.

Rx, KYBC’s first film project, was initiated when Jesse was 16 years old.  The film features a cast of local actors and was filmed entirely in Hilo, Volcano and other Big Island sites. Rx tells the story of what happens when the main character, Jason Glenn, a high school drug dealer, encounters a persistent, vengeful detective who lost his own family to high flying teens. Robert Lindbergh and Anna White costar. Other familiar local faces in the film are Peter Serafin, Mwangi Jahi, Nicholas Brousseau, Clay Callaway, Ty Lewis, Wade Cambern and Trina Nahm-Mijo.

The film will be followed by a question and answer session with the Director, Jesse Tunison, focusing on the challenges and lessons learned in creating a full length film. The session will be hosted by Big Island Film Commissioner, John Mason. A reception will follow in the theatre lobby. Pre-event tickets which include the reception are $5 and are available online at: www.kybc808.com; at KYBC, p. 966-6354, and at the LEAD Center, M-F, 11 a.m. -2 p.m. Tickets will also be available on the night of the performance for $6 at the box office starting at 6:15 p.m. Seating for this one night showing is limited, so it is suggested to get your tickets early. All proceeds will go to supporting Kea`au Youth Business Center, an award-winning program whose mission is to create, promote, and market  education, arts and culture, and health projects and products created by youth to contribute to the economic viability of the County of Hawai`i.
